 NPC National-Level Competition Videos

There are only two NPC shows in which pro cards are given out in the men's open division, the USA Championships and the National Championships. It's to these two competitions that the best in men's amateur bodybuilding navigate to. There were 182 competitors: 105 competitors in the men's bodybuilding division; 36 in the women's bodybuilding division; and 41 in the fitness division.

In the men's bodybuilding division, pro cards are given to the men's overall winner and the runner-up. This is new this year. Until now, a pro card was given at this show only to the overall winner. In the women's bodybuilding division, the overall winner receives a pro card. In the fitness division, pro cards are given to the winners and the runners-up in each class.

Very noticeable was the absence of Aaron Maddron, whom many had expected to compete and finally claim his pro card. However, Aaron decided to hold off and wait for the National Championships.

The next and biggest NPC pro-qualifier for men's bodybuilding will be the National Championships to be held on October 15-16 in Orlando FL. This is considered the most prestigious of all shows at which to turn pro. I understand about 50% more competitors are expected. At that show, pro cards will be given out to each class winner.

Eric Otero was one of the most impressive of the show. The judges couldn't get this one wrong. Eric received a total of 5 points from 5 judges, which was a solid 10 points ahead of 2nd place. That's across-the-board first place votes! He came in really thick, fully muscled, hard, and tight. He was a complete package from all angles with almost no room for improvement. Eric is capable in planning his workouts and his diet. As far as timing goes, I don't think it is even possible to nail it this good and hold it very long. He peaked at the right minute on the right day. He is a master at timing competition preparation. Eric is 30 years, 5'4", 176 lbs. Eric will be at the Nationals in Ocotober where he is bound to receive a pro card.

Tito Raymond can't seem to do anything wrong as far as the fans are concerned. He has a truly pleasing balance, shape, and fullness to his physique. Tito actually came in tied for 3rd, moving to 4th as a result of a tie-breaker. One week later, Tito won his class at the NPC Team Universe in New York City. He will be representing the USA at the IFBB World Championships in November. Tito is 29 years, 5'8", 176 lbs, and impressive.

John Cowgill is a competitor with thick, full muscle bellies, evidence of being at this sport for a while. His heavy bulk worked well with his tight waist and sharp visible obliques. John is a 37 year old, 5'9", 198# personal trainer. With just a little more hardness and striations showing through, John will be unbelievable. The problem will be in doing that without losing any of his awesome fullness.

John Vorves has great thickness to his physique. His biceps look particularly big and actually have baseball size and shape. Just a little more tightening and hardening will move John way up in the rankings. John is a 29 year old, 5'5", 196# gym owner.

    Ali Matteau, MN
    Bill Straka, MO
    Reginald Whitmore, MI
Garrett Downing was the night's overall runner-up, earning him the competition's second IFBB pro card. He came in with a good full thick look.

Breathing down Garrett's neck was Tevita Aholelei, one point out of first place. Tevita came in really hard. This was a tight call.

John King is a 32 year old, 5'9", 216 lb. personal trainer. He came in looking pretty near as good as it gets from his abs down. His strong parts were his quads, obliques, and abs. He could use a little more size in his upper body, but he is a stand out. He was coached for this show by Tom Prince.

Mohamad Moussawi is a 25 year old, 5'8", 217# nutrition store owner. He came in with a physique that was both full and well-balanced. He should keep at adding size, as it seems to fall with good symmetry. A little more tightness and hardness would help Mohamad quite a bit.

Super-Heavyweight

  1. Melvin Anthony, CA*
  2. Erik Fromm, CO
  3. Robert Habeeb, FL
  4. Stokely Palmer, NJ
  5. Jeramy Freeman, NY

  15. Mitch McIntyre, CA
  16. Russell Harrison
    Kevin Holley, WA
This was Melvin Anthony's show, and he deserved it. He came in with great fullness in the right places. But what made him stand out was his tightness, down to his tapered waist, and his hardness. He proved to be an awesome poser when it came to the individual round.

Erik Fromm was one of the big standouts of this show. Although he came to this show with a name that is pretty well established in the sport, he made a clear statement warning others of his potential. Most noticeable was his perfect timing and marked improvement between the weigh-in and the contest. He was hard, dense, and full. I was warned ahead of time by Jeff Taylor, NPC chairman from Colorado, that Erik will be unbelievable. Jeff was right on the money. If Erik can maintain and improve on this condition, he will be dangerous to compete against.

Jeramy Freeman is a big favorite with the public. If you meet Jeramy, you become a fan. He's one of the friendliest names in the sport. He has a great relationship with the camera. He's the kind of competitor that audiences pay money to see. Jeramy came to the weigh-in looking like he was ready to claim a trophy. He had awesome fullness and shape. Everything was on the money down to the tan. Unfortunately, his last minute strategy took him off target and he flattened out for the judging. Jeramy truly has awesome potential and is worth watching on stage anytime.

Joe DeAngelis is one of the big names in the sport. Take one look at this guy and you can see his powerlifting history. He's a cross between a thick powerful look and a pleasing balanced aesthetic look, which we need more of. He's awesome wherever he appears. Joe is 30 years old, 5'10", 243#, and works in public relations and marketing.

Brad Hollibaugh showed some great size and fullness at this show. He has already mastered the primary objective of mass. A little more sharpness would help him. However, I had Brad placing higher, probably around 7th or 8th. Brad is a 32 year old personal trainer measuring 5'9" and 247 lbs.
